prednisone and diarrhea in dogs? My shih tzu takes prednisone for his skin which helps alot. But he is getting diarrhea, I think from the prednisone. He sees the vet in six days. I am waiting for a call from her to talk about it. I'm thinking of asking her to go back to an antihistimine and give it a try long term instead of the pred. long term. Anyone go through this? What worked best for your dog as far as antihistimines? HELP!

Otis mastiff replied: "Prednisone does cause a loose stool. In addition to that, after long term use, the dogs' hair can begin to fall out. My Dobie has Wobbler's so prednisone is the treatment of choice. If there is an alternative such as antihistamines, I would take it."

Ace replied: "I have a 12 year old chow and she is having skin problems also and also taking prednisone. She has not had problems with diarrhea, but has needed encouragement to eat much. She will be done with that in 3 days and I have talked to my vet and told her that the chow I had before Maya had skin problems and her vet gave her Hydroxyzine. The vet told me that yes that was good, that the prednisone would take care of the acute situation and then she would put her on the Hydroxyzine for maintenance of the skin problem. We had no negative side effects with the Hydroxyzine when used in the past. Hope this helps! Ace"

Ista replied: "My male chi was put on predinsone for his back troubles. When I give it to him, he's a pooping machine for days! I'd never seen so much poo come out of such a little dog. It wasn't diarrhea though, but there certainly was more poo than usual!"

arkpudel replied: "Unfortunately, steroids (like prednisone) have a laundry list of complications that can come with it. It can cause loss of appetite, increased appetite, diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth, etc., etc., etc. But, on the flip side, it's also a GREAT medication for so many conditions. Definately talk to your vet about your concerns. But, remember, you can't just stop the prednisone- it must be weaned off methodically- so make sure you get the instructions from her. As for the skin, it depends on what, exactly, the issue is. If it's allergies, you might ask your vet about doing allergy testing. It's not real accurate, but it might help identify what your dog is allergic to. A diet change might also be in order. Look for a dog food that is low in corn, or that has a different "starch" source, like switch from rice to potato."

LORD Z replied: "Did your doctor rule out an allergy? The weezing could be from an allergy and causing the coughing, while the diarrhea could be a result of the antibiotics. You might want to examine what you have eaten lately as well as anything new you have come in contact with. You should also get a chest xray and a cbc to rule out other possibilities. Meanwhile, drink lots of fluids to avoid dihydration."

winchamp replied: "As far as telling people about the diarrhea, if you are referring to doctors, then by all means yes. Be sure to tell a doctor of any and all symptoms you may be experiencing. It may be a side effect of the medications you are taking. Or you may have one or more problems taking place. The coughing and wheezing seem to be going hand in hand. You may be experiencing an upper respiratory infection. That may be why your doctor prescribed you antibiotics. The diarrhea may be a side affect of the medication. You may want to check with your doctor to let him / her know if you having any new symptoms since he / she prescribed the medication you are taking."

Pookie's mom replied: "Give your course of treatment more time, you haven't been on it long enough. Are you considered morbidly obese? Morbid obesity can lead to cases of refractory wheezing (wheezing that does not improve with bronchodilators). Also some steriods can cause the refractory wheezing. If your treating physician's care is not helping you, get a consult with a pulmonologist. Good luck."

lalaland...123 replied: "what was the anti-biotic for? what were your symptoms before the doctor put you on anti-biotics? diarrhea sounds like the side-effect in the anti-biotics -- very common side-effects among other medications. i bet it'll stop as soon as you finish taking your anti-biotics let the doctor know in your follow-up check up"

Crohn's Disease sufferers: How do you control the diarrhea? I'm taking Prednisone and Mesalamine, but every 20-30 min. I'm up and running to the bathroom...all day, all night, 24/7! I'm getting no sleep and no rest.

anthentherwasi replied: "well i feel for you but i have never gotten diarrhea that bad i have had crohn's since i was 14 i'm 29 now i had the surgery where they remove part of the intestine and it helped for 13 years no problems it came back again when i was 27 now i take remicade every 8 weeks and it works great. even when i took prednisone that worked by itself it just gave me a short fuse so i had to leave it alone but good luck finding a treatment right for you"

If you've been on them for a while, it's time to call your GI and think of another game plan so you can be pain free & get some rest. Are you a candidate for Entocort, Remicade, Humira, 6MP, or Imuran? Most GIs now are staying away from prednisone due to the lifelong side effects such as brittle bones, glaucoma, &osteoporosis. If you go to the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America site you can find alot of information plus you can chat online with a healthcare professional who is extremely knowledgable about CD. There is also a help line you can call: 1-888-MY.GUT.PAIN( 1-888-694-8872) M-F 9 am - 5pm. Yes, this disease is a pain in the butt, (no pun intended). Definitely check out the CCFA site for the latest treatments, diet, support chapters in your town, etc. to educate yourself then share that information with your GI if he is not up to date on the newer methods. Prednisone...? Can taking prednisone orally (40 mg) cause diarrhea?

I think it effects everybody differently though. I know its important to have very little sodium intake while taking it because it does cause water retention and bloating."

mamanurse replied: "Yeah, but not very common. What you should know, is taking prednisone for over 4-6 weeks, can cause you to get moon face. That is very common! It makes you look like you have gained 15 pounds, but all in your face. IT goes away once you stop taking it, but definately somnething you should be aware of."

Well i took it for stomach probleems, so if have stomach probs too, then maybe thats why u get diarriah, but i dont specifically rmemeember getting diarriad from it, it didnt have alist of websites. Oooo, one time i found this website that had a whole slew of that type of medicine, andeveeyone posted their side effects. It was for crohns, but Prednisone was also listed, maybe do a search for a website like that?"

Gaining weight with prednisone? I was perscribed prednisone when I had a bad allergy season. I was given the prednisone with an allergy medicine (claritin). I was only given 10 days worth of the per ion. He told me it would be out of my system with in days of stopping the medication. After that I have had a steady weight gain with no other changes in my lifestyle. I have been unable to lose the weight it seems to have stopped, but now I an very overweight. I also have a problem with diarrhea with most of the things I eat. I have tried to eliminate different foods but it seems to be something different each time. I have no idea how to fix it, so anything will help. Thanks

Adam replied: "That is a steroid, and with all steroids it makes you hungry and while taking it you will probably eat significantly more. However, given that it should be out of your system, it may be mental or just you grew into a more unhealthy schedule and never went back to normal after finishing the drug. You should really talk it over with your doctor since when I took it for swelling, I ate more, but stopped after I finished taking it."

i'm scared to put my golden on prednisone for what my vet THINKS might be an immune disease but not for sur. my dog got sick for about a week really high fever, very lethargic,no appetite. Had no diarrhea, no vomiting. she was having a hard time getting up and looked really stiff. took her to specialist did all kinds of tests and came back with what she called as mediated immune disease affecting her joints. now my dog seems fine and back to normal. the vet still wants to put her on prednisone just in case but i feel like that may be more harmful to her especially if what she had was just a really bad bug and I have read quite a bit about prednisone that scares me. i dont want it to do more harm than good or to give her something that she may not even need.

Pam replied: "If you're anything like me your golden is a member of your family even maybe like a child. If you're unsure get a second opinion treat it like you would a helpless child. Prednisone is not a good thing to put in our or our pets body if not necessary. My Pekignese has lower back trouble they have him on a arthritis medecine. They also wanted him to take Prednisone I checked into it,l beg of you to get a second opinion."

iluvtorofl replied: "It wouldn't hurt to get the prednisone and keep it on hand. Goldens (the breed) have lots of problems with allergies and other auto-immune problems. Prednisone will help with swelling too if the dog gets arthritis. Corticosteroids will take down swelling and inflammation and help with auto-immune problems and over-reactions such as allergies. Now if it were my dog, and she had some swelling and pain from it in the joints, I would demand prednisone for her. I don't want to see her in pain."

Are most people finding that Benadryl twice a day helps their dogs itching? I had my Aussie on Prednisone and he has 'tremendous' diarrhea problems with it. Plus he still itches a little. The vet. said Benadryl. What has been the success rate and how long before it really kicks in and takes hold. And are you giving them the 2 a day?

Anyone have Lupus or know any information on it? I have been living with the diagnosis for 7 years. The medications seem to make me more sick? Does anyone know of any meds that actually made them feel better. Right now my symptoms are swollen, sore joints. Fatigue. Uncontrolled diarrhea. And hair loss. Anyone with experience? I am taking plaquenil, silica and prednisone but things seem to be getting worse. My C3 and C4 complements are very low. Any suggestions?

Jo-Jo replied: "I have RA and Psoriactic Arthrist for 7 years now and yes I can say I had to live with pain and which as Psoriactic my symptoms are swollen really bad in the joints especelly my knees. It's seem that Lupus are about the same groups of Arthrist I have. The advices I can give you are: warm bath when needed, for the joints are swollen somes times ices pack can be helpful or a warm blanket for 15 min. Avoid cold places. And I've been on this medication (Prednisone) since a week for the swollen of my knee and I can say it is benefits. If you have any questions feels free to ask. Good luck."

None of the meds the doctors prescribed me were working. i was on cytoxan and all my hair fell out. Took 5 days of prednisone, could these be side effects? my doctor started me on 5 days of prednisone (2 pills a day) for asthma. i took all of my doses and my last one was on monday march 30th (one week ago). I was fine that whole time, Now after discontinuing the use Im feeling very nauseous, dizzy, weak, tired (ive been sleeping for about 10 hours a day), and i have diarrhea , This started roughly last wednesday, could this be from the prednisone? If so how much longer until these side effects start to subside?

Mollybolly replied: "did they not taper you down? yes, those are side effects. you may also sweat pools! and not just regular sweat...really stinky, throw away your pillows stinky! they shouldnt last too much longer. Drink TONS of water to try and flush your system. If you are still having problems after this Wed. go to your doc. I HATE STEROIDS!!"

Diarrhea; does anyone know someone that has experienced this? Continuining to stump doctors...very desperate!? I have chronic explosive watery diarrhea. I do not bleed, do not have stomach pains, have lost no weight and have no other symptoms. This have been going on for over 2 years and I frequently experience incontinence. I am 23 years old serving in the military and are in great shape. In a nut shell, I've had multiple CT scans and colonoscopies, capsule endoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, endoscopy and a hida scan. I have been treated for Crohn's and Colitis. I have been tested for Celiac and parasites in my stool. I have taken strong antibiotics (Flagyl and Levaquin at the same time), Prednisone, all to no avail. I have been seen by many Gastroenterologists to include UCLA Gastroenterology. The only things doctors can find is mild inflammation, which is in different spots on each CT scan. During one colonoscopy, they found mild inflammation which was negative on pathology from biopsy. Doctors are stumped, know there is a problem because I experienced the embarassing accident at the doctors office, and have no idea because they've seen nothing like it. They state I have a condition, which in seen rarely, and it'll take the right doctor to figure it out. Is this anything you have either seen or reminds you of? Any suggestion and/or ideas would be greatly appreciated. I contantsly map out bathroom when I leave my house because once I get the urge, I hade less than one minute to go or I'll have an accident. I have recently had my gallbladder removed because they thought that was the issue. It has been some time since the operation and I do not feel better, nor has it gotten worse.

Are you having enough fibre? Do you drink a lot of water? Fibre will make the stool bond but water will dilute it. Have you seen a nutritionist? Dude that sucks so much"

sweet.caroline replied: "Do you eat yogurt? If not, do as it puts back good bacteria in your stomach, especially when you take antibiotics. When we have a problem we take Immodiium but usually you do that after you have a loose stool. But sounds like you should ask doctor if it is okay to take on a regular basis, like when you leave the house to try to solidify the stool. Could you be lactose intolerant? Try the yogurt, can't hurt and might help."

How about severe stress from past or present experiences? You said no cramps, but have wild shot on food allergies like to wheat products or dairy. Wish I had more. Good Luck!"

So, someone told me about Habba syndrome.. Does this sound like you? It is an association between a dysfunctional, intact gallbladder and chronic diarrhea. Patients with the syndrome present with varying degrees of chronic diarrhea (three or more bowel movements per day for at least three months). Diarrhea is classically described as frequent, loose bowel movements and may be watery in nature. They could be explosive at times and may even be associated with great urgency and even incontinence. Diarrhea is mostly after meals (post prandial diarrhea). Because of this urgency, patients usually look for a bathroom wherever they go, also known as "bathroom mapping". These symptoms are usually very distressing and may cause social embarrassment and interference with daily activities. Some patients are even homebound in fear of social embarrassment. Some lose weight because they are afraid to eat for fear of getting diarrhea. Diarrhea is rarely nocturnal, unless the patient had a late meal close to bedtime. It is not associated with blood, unless it comes from irritation of the rectal area as a result of frequent bowel movements. Dr. Habba found that this type of diarrhea is associated with dysfunctional gallbladder. Is there pain associated with this syndrome? The patient would not necessarily have abdominal pain related to the gallbladder disease. They could be completely free of any abdominal pain. The gallbladder function is only determined by an abnormal radio-nuclear test that studies the function of the gallbladder (DISIDA scan with CCK injection). This test is non-invasive and can be performed in all well-equipped hospitals and radiology centers. If ultrasound of the gallbladder is normal, could I still have the syndrome? Absolutely. In fact, most of the patients with the syndrome have normal ultrasound of the gallbladder. However, the presence of gallstones on ultrasound does not rule out the diagnosis of the syndrome. Fixing this problem is very easy too! You'll feel that all the Drs are stupid when you get this info to them and they Rx you simple bile acid binding agents such as Cholestyramine. There's no actual amount that you are prescribed to take. I started with a half a scoop in OJ every morning and noticed a difference within 3 days. I needed a bit more than that to completely control the diarrhea, so I went to a full scoop. Fixed the problem completely! You've got to be careful that you don't overdose this tho.... you'll end up plugged up! lol! Anyways, print off the info on this website, take it to the Dr, and they'll agree.... at least mine did! I felt that I needed the dr to pay me for doing his job...."

Debbie S replied: "Since you have no cramping or pain it probably isn't it but have they checked you for "Collagenous" Colitis? It is different from colitis and also pretty rare. They can only find this by biopsy of the polyps after an colonoscopy. The trick to this condition is that your colonoscopy will come back normal so usually they don't biopsy the polyps. D"
