Cowgirl replied: "Very simple. My son had reflux so I had to use the AR formula as well but all formulas foam up when you shake them up. Take a bottle of Mylicon Drops and just put two drops in the baby's bottle and shake it up then foam should be gone for the most part. Mylicon Drop are a gas relief medicine for infants and toddlers and safe to use in all the childs bottles.
Also to decrease the reflux burp him between every ounce in the bottle or every half an ounce depending on how bad his reflux is. It takes a bit long then just giving him the bottle and feeding it to him but helps alot to get them to put on weight and build their immune system because they will finally be getting all the nutrients they need."
Katie replied: "I had that same issue, but if you put a few drops of gas drops (Mylicon or the store brand infant gas drops) then the foam will disintegrate in just a second. We never make a bottle without it now."
anyone use enfamil AR? ok, first off, i don't need and won't read any responses regarding breastfeeding or anything of the such so dont waste your time typing it out....as for why i ff, it is none of your business....
my dd has gerd and is currently taking zantac, but we recently bought a can of the AR...well have only tried it twice so far, and it seems to be so thick even in the bottle that she needs a faster flow nipple just to get it out!! from the two feeds it does appear to cut down on the amt of spit up, but hard to tell yet....so i was wondering if anyone had any experience with it, good or bad, what kind of experiences with it,did it noticeably decrease the amt of spitting up? did your child seem happier on it? and any tips or tricks i should know when using it? and did anyone have any trouble with constipation using it or any other side effects? thanks all who gave an answer to the question and skipped the breastfeeding rants, i appreciate your time in answering...oh and did anyone find a generic of the AR? I have looked everywhere and found a generic i think of every other brand and type out there except this one...LOL
tonnie
if you are here to type anything related to breastfeeding, i won't read your response, so you might as well save your time; only useful posts will be read.
ok, dd has reflux...lots of spit up and lots more spit up even though she is on acid med, it doesn't help the amt she spits up...she cries everytime we burp (or attempt to burp)her, and generally keeps spitting up on and off until the next meal; she's definately not overeating for her age/size....we are experimenting with enfamil AR at the moment, i was wondering if anyone had experience with it, how it went, how well it worked for them, any probs they had, etc....also now curious about the gentleease (sp?)--anyone use that with success as to this problem? i can't find a generic of the AR--does anyone know where i can find one? do they make a generic of the gentle ease and where can i find that? thanks to all who answer...
sorry guys didn't realize how this worked and thought i had to basically type everything over....LOL
thanks for patiently reading my post....:O)

kass replied: "My baby had colic pretty bad and possibly reflux. The Dr gave us some samples to give him (I think prevacid) But, we tryed all the other 'tricks' first. He pretty much grew out of that around 3 1/2 months but then started spitting up pretty bad. His Dr told us to try the A.R. We did for a couple days. I hated it! It was very thick like you said and really hard to get it to dissolve all the way. the would be chunks left at the end, which was really hard to tell when he was done because the whole bottle would be filled with bubbles. I posted a question on here also and a couple people said they liked it. One tip I got was to make enough for a day in advance and store it in the refrigerator and heat it as needed, but honestly I didn't try it because I dont think it would work. As the baby drinks it creates more bubbles. I ended up going back to gentlease. (thats what he was on for the colic) because he still spit up pretty bad with the A.R. it just came out in huge chunks. That bothered him more then they other (and was pretty gross also) But, my baby didn't have a huge problem with reflux. It might be worth it for you to stick it out and see if it helps. As for the generic.. never have saw any. But, haven't looked. You could add just a touch of rice cereal (for babies) in the bottle. My babies Dr also told me I could try that. Good luck o you!"
when does a babies reflux get better? my four month old son has reflux, does it go away when you start giving solids? he hardly sleeps during the day and is always fussy. He's on zantac and enfamil lipil ar, any tips on how to make him feel a bit better?

I found that this helped most of the time. She is now about 8 months and it is so much better. At the same time things did get better when I started to feed her cereal. Consult with your Dr. but 4 months is the time when I started feeding her cereal and I did notice the difference."

Sorry to be flippant, our first born (now nearly 11) was just the same, every bottle feed was accompanied by the laying out of tea towels to protect the furniture. We didn't use any medication apart from infacol for trapped wind. It's just one of those things you have to get through and if I remember, it started to improve when she had a little bit of rusk in her bottle and stopped altogether when She was on solids. stick with it anyway, it doesn't last forever."

My GP told me she wouldn't grow out of it until she turned one but that seems to be a text book answer.
Keeping them slightly upright for half an hour after milk seems to help - but of course that isn't ideal in the middle of the night.
Your baby could be fussy because of acid babies with reflux often suffer from acid (luckily my daughter didn't seem to). I remember being offered something to help with the acid so I would ask your Doctor or Health Visitor.
Don't worry it won't last forever!"

Kelli M replied: "My son has reflux and has had since birth. We kept him upright as much as possible after eating (we brought his car seat in the house for him to sit in and we also sat him in his bouncy seat or a still swing) and this seemed to lessen the amount that came back out. Also when you begin rice cereal or baby cereal in general that seems to help, has your doctor suggested thickening the formula with cereal? This really helped my son. Hope this helps."
cez replied: "most babies do grow out of it by about 1 year but unfortunately my 22 month old still has reflux. he doesn't vomit much now but refluxes into his throat which causes his heart rate to drop and for him to go slightly blue. his has been referred to the surgeons now but this is very rare. my other 3 children had reflux and all grew out of it in their 1st year. swaddling my babies and holding them upright helped, as did propping one end of their cot up.. also letting him sleep in his pram during the day with the seat slightly upright so he is not flat on his back. i know exactly what you are going through and hope it is over for you soon."

so when you feed your baby keep them up right after the feed and let gravity help

3-month old with acid reflux, what can I do to helf her suffer less? Please help, it's heart-breaking.... Feeding my daughter has always been a struggle for both of us. First I thought it's she has a very small appetite, then somehow I found out she'd become very fussy and even scream during her meal, and doc finally diagnosed her with reflux. She's now having Zantac, Enfamil AR (thickened), but doesn't seem helping her much. I believe she has already associated the burning pain with the milk, that's what she's taking REALLY little (like 1 or 2 oz in every 3 hrs), but she's gaining weight (10th percentile), so doctor said she's gonna outgrow it. But in the meantime, I really wanna do something to help her. She sometimes even vomits MASSIVE amount and even pour it out from her little nose. It just breaks my heart. I'm already sitting her upright, burp alot, sit her up 30 mins after eating....she's still in pain. I heard goat mik helps, just wanna the reason behind or it's just for certain babies. I can't bear to see her go through this, she's a very happy baby, it just hurts a lot.

I wish you and your baby the best. Take care."
Natalia D replied: "Here is what I found. Hope it Helps. Good luck
Specific treatment for gastroesophageal reflux will be determined by your baby's physician based on:
your baby's gestational age, overall health, and medical history
the extent of the disease
your baby's tolerance for specific medications, procedures, or therapies
the expectations for the course of the disease
your opinion or preference
In many cases, GER can be relieved through feeding changes, under the direction of your baby's physician. Some ways to better manage GER symptoms include the following:
After feedings, place your baby on his/her stomach with the upper body elevated at least 30 degrees, or hold him/her in a sitting position in your lap for 30 minutes. Because stomach sleeping has been associated with an increased risk for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), check with your baby's physician about how to position your baby for sleeping.
If bottle feeding, keep the nipple filled with milk so your infant does not swallow too much air while eating. Try different nipples to find one that allows your baby's mouth to make a good seal with the nipple during feeding.
Adding rice cereal to feeding may be beneficial for some older babies.
Burp your baby several times during bottle feeding or breastfeeding. Your baby may reflux more often when burping with a full stomach.
Make sure your baby's diaper is loose.
Treatment may include:
medications
If needed, your baby's physician may prescribe medications to help with reflux. There are medications which help decrease the amount of acid the stomach makes, which, in turn, will cut down on the heartburn associated with reflux.
Another type of medication your baby's physician may prescribe will help to empty the stomach faster. If food does not remain in the stomach as long as usual, there may be less chance of reflux occurring.
calorie supplements
Some babies with reflux will not be able to gain weight due to frequent vomiting. Your baby's physician may recommend the following:
adding rice cereal to baby formula
providing your infant with more calories by adding a prescribed supplement to formula or breast milk to make the milk higher in calories than normal
tube feedings
Some babies with reflux have other conditions that make them tired, such as congenital heart disease or prematurity. In addition to having reflux, these babies may not be able to drink very much without becoming sleepy. Other babies are not able to tolerate a normal amount of formula in the stomach without vomiting, and would do better if a small amount of milk was given continuously. In both of these cases, tube feedings may be recommended. Formula or breast milk is given through a tube that is placed in the nose, guided through the esophagus, and into the stomach (nasogastric tube). Nasogastric tube feedings can be given in addition to, or instead of, what a baby takes from a bottle, as directed by your baby's physician.
Many babies with GER will "outgrow it" by the time they are about a year old, as the lower esophageal sphincter becomes stronger.
This might be helpful too"

shredded_lettuce replied: "Our son began having acid reflux when he was about 2 weeks. We tried thickening his milk with only a little success. We went to see the paediatrician who gave us a list of options. We chose to try losec (10 mg). Within 2 days the acid tummy & screaming and projectile vomiting disappeared completely. Even with reflux and vomiting he was growing, so that isn't always an indicator.
So, I would be quick to suggest losec. It also helped my sister's baby's reflux.
Some of the other options given to us by the paediatrician were:
1. adding some rice cereal to each bottle to thicken it even more
2. raising him on more of an incline during sleep to help digestion
3. other options included zantac or gaviscol etc but losec was the best on the list
It's not okay when a baby is vomiting like that, and the pain isn't okay either so please don't listen to the doctor when he says she will outgrow it! Demand a referral to a paediatrician - they KNOW what they are dealing with. If your doctor won't refer you to a paediatrician, go to another doctor just for the referral.
I hope you find a solution for bubs soon, its heartwrenching stuff, but with treatment you can fix it!
Btw...incase you are wondering if there is a milk allergy or lactose intolerance, if that is the case her stools will probably appear frothy.
Good luck."

My daughter is a newborn Nov 18th, 03 and just 5 days ago was diagnosed with acid reflux. We have tried changing formula to something that does not have milk protein in it called alimentum but she still spit it up. The dr has her taking reglan and zantac. We do not like her taking this and it does not seem to be helping she spits it up when we give her the zantac and the reglan seems to really upset her belly when we give that to her. Can you suggest natural medicine that I can ask my dr about that could be an alternative. She is open to us using alternative medicine for her but I would like to see what is available that I could discuss with her. I understand that you can not tell me what to use I would just like to know what can work that I can speak with my childs ped about to see if she knows about it and if it can be safe for me to try with my daughter. Thank you for any help you can provide
Answer
Thanks for asking! Bless her little heart. I hate it when babies have problems.
I'd suggest trying one or more of the following for her. They're all "baby-safe" and should help. She may still need some pre ion antacid, but you may well be able to reduce the dosage considerably and get it down to just one:
A tablespoon of unsweetened pineapple juice before feedings. The bromelain should help with digestion and reduce the acid.
A teaspoon of mild chamomile tea after eating (or mixed in with her bottle). It soothes the esophagus and will ease the burn while helping settle her tummy.
A little extra calcium mixed in her formula. Calcium is alkaline and will help neutralize the acids. Besides, it's good for building her bones. A company called Sundown makes a liquid calcium supplement in capsule form - you could easily just break a capsule into the bottle.
A VERY dilute tea of ginger, peppermint, and crushed dill seeds (make one cup of tea, then add another cup of water)- a teaspoon during or after eating aids digestion and helps prevent some of the muscle spasms that send the acids back upwards.
Thank you again. Please let me know if you or your daughter's doctor have any other questions. I'll be happy to help."

And WOW that night he only cried for about 30 minutes verses 6 hours!!!!! on the can it says for babies with colic due to cow's milk protien allergy and that basicly means that protien is ruff to digest this formula is hyplallegenic. I am on wic so I can get this but it is 25$ a can 16oz here in Oregon I have to have the dr write a for it so wic will pay for it. Enfamil AP and now baby is constipated at 1 month...anything to do about it? My son has acid refulx and got started on zantac yesterday, as well as switched from Similac advance to Enfamil AR Lipil, and now he has been really constipated, trying to have a bowel movement and crying, but he has only had one since we started him on this formula, and it was very thick and dark green. is there anything that i can give him OTC to help relieve the discomfort? I gave him some baby tylenol last night and it helped him sleep, but i know that does not solve the problem
I cant switch his formula bc he is spitting up a lot and he needs to take this AR formula, it is also supposed to help his reflux..

I would probally switch formulas too."

Miguels mommy <3 replied: "Try giving him like half an ounce of water after a bottle to wash it down make sure its boiled and cooled, or you can switch to an easier formula and soem pediatricians reccomend adding a little of rice cereal to a gentler formula, worked for my friend.
My baby had mild reflux, not enough for medication and severe gas, the formula that worked for us was Enfamil gentlease, he poops great, has less gas, and even less reflux becaue its gentle on the system, you could give that a try!, theres a generic walmart version too Parents choice gentle, cuz its very pricy!
Good luck! Give the zantac some time to work in, you might find hell be fine on another formula once the medication works."
Mrs. Janice replied: "Try putting an ounce of Dark Karo Syrup into four ounces of formula. This is what the pediatrician told me to do for two of my children who got very constipated as babies from the soy formula they were on. There are two Karo syrups: Dark and Light. For some reason only the Dark one works for constipation. You can find it in the baking aisle of almost any grocery store. It worked quickly and without any side effects. I used to do this in one bottle a day which was usually the morning bottle. It usually worked within a half hour, but on the rare incident that it did not I would give an additional bottle of it at night. I continued to do this in one bottle a day and it helped keep them regular.
What ever you do don't listen to that idiot who told you to water down the formula more... this could make the baby very, very sick."
su_france2003 replied: "A small dose of baby-ready prune, pear, apple or white grape juice may help.
If it gets to the point where he can't do a smelly for 3 or 4 days, put a baby-size glycerine suppository in him."
6 month old spitting up problems? My 6 month old was put on Zantac two days ago, she is spitting up more than ever before now. She has been on 4 different formula's and now on Enfamil AR with the zantac. Why is this happening??
She is spitting up at least every 5 minutes until she is ready for her next bottle. Quite a bit at a time.
Sara replied: "is it a lot of spit up? i mean you said "more than ever" with the other formulas was it the whole amount eaten spit up? or is it half? i mean theres a difference in spit up and vomit.. if she is vomitting theres something wrong.. if its just maybe half of what she drank, then it might be that she has a sensitive gag reflux and even having a burp in her tummy is making her spit up.. If you have kept switching formulas im guessing you spoke with your pediatrician about it, talk to them again and they should know a good reason or what you can try next. Good Luck to you!"
fatima_mst replied: "My son is on Prevacid Solutabs 15mg, he started it when he was bout 5 months old becuase he would still be spitting up when it was time for his next bottle, sometimes he would even projectile vomit.
What else is your daughter eating? It may be the baby food if she is eating that yet. The reflux medicine helps my son a lot as far as keeping his formula down but we still have to be careful with the baby foods. Pretty much anything yellow or orange makes him spitup and gives him heartburn. Sweet Potatoes, Carrots, Squash, Prunes- all these he will spit up, so we cut it down with some green ones sweet peas, green beans or applesauce. Then he has no problems. We just mix them together. He loves applesauce and it doesn't bother him. Bannanas he likes to but forget it that he will projevtile vomit.
My pediatrician recommended we still put cereal in his bottles, he explained to me that the Prevacid would help reduce the acid but the cereal would help the mechanical action of the formula coming up, it weighs it down. He instructed me to use 1 teaspoon of cereal per ounce of formula. The rice cereal is too connstipating so we use oatmeal cereal and that seems to be better.
If the flavor of this new formula is strong that may be what is causing her to spit up more. Try some cereal if you haven't already. Also, if she is on baby foods watch what she is eating.
Remember to keep her upright for at least 15mins after she eats and don't jostle her around.
There is also a website, I think it's reflux.org, or infantreflux.org, something like that but either way it is very helpful.
If your baby is still haviing problems you may want to ask your doctor for a referral to a pediatric gastrointestinal doctor, or go on your own if you feel your doctor is not being helpful.
Also, my doctor told me the reflux meds (zantac, prevacid) don't work right away, it can take 4-7 days before you notice a change.
I hope this helps, feel free to email me if I can be of further help. I know how frustrating this is and uncomfortable for the baby. Hugs and kisses to her, hope she feels better."
Could i sue my daughters pediatrician? I am not going to but I am VERY mad with my daughters 1st doctor. Its a very long story but if you want to read it this is what happen...
My daughter (who is 5months today) was really sick almost since birth! At 1st the doctor told me nothing was wrong. I had gone to the doctors pretty much every week for a month before they told me she had acid reflex and so we switched her from regular enfamil to enfamil ar and zantac and she was still sick all the time throwing up and throwing up and not gaining any weight and was not sleeping much crying in pain 24/7. Her doc kept saying she was fine. So we went back often and he kept telling me it was her acid reflex and would up her dose and sometimes she would make it a day with out crying but it was still bad. When we went back to her 4month apt i told him she is still always in pain he said we will up the dose of the meds I asked should i try to change the formula and he said no way because it will make it worse. Being a 1st time mother i listened even though i though he was wrong. A few days later we called she had been crying for 3 days non stop not eating and thowing up they said give it more time for the meds to kick im (this was a friday so we had to wait til monday to see them again) this means it was almost a full week of her throwing up more then she was eating she would scream in pain most the day sleep maybe 3 twenty minute naps a day and again he said nothing was wrong we just need to up the dose, at this point i was mad and knew something was very wrong,so we switched to a new doctor. She thinks she has a milk allergy so she switched her to Alimentum similac and prilosec and that was the problem she was allergic to the formula. It got to the point she has blood in her stool because she was on the wrong stuff and it hurt her belly. I am told she can not start food right away and now has to be on a certin formula. There was many times i asked to switch her formula and every time he shot it down. Also a time I went to him asking if she had an ear infection he said no a week later i went back saw a differnt doctor and all of a sudden she had an ear infection. I als at the 4 month apt asked if she had teeth coming in he said no way and the next day they came through. I think this doctor should not have his job. I am a 1st time mother and what if i had stayed with him? How much worse then poop in her stool would it have gotten? She was in pain for almost the whole 1st 5 months. Does any one know if i can sue? And how much i can sue for? I want him fired or at least for people to know he is not a good doctor.
I am ready wrote a letter to the board of health i am just so upset with how sick she is because she has been in so much pain.
This is the shorter story to what happen there is a lot more to it then just this. Such as i have her records saying how often i was there and why and what was said. Also i did bring her to the er and they told me to bring her back to her doctor because they will know what to do because they know her on a one and one bases (it was worded different then that) I am not trying to sue and i dont want the money i was just wondering and i am just mad at the doctor.
Aubrey D replied: "You probally would have won if you where to sue him, since he neglected your daughters sickness. He probally wanted to keep making money off of your doctors visits. Hope she's better now

ae92man replied: "Oh yes you could sue alright. Is there proof, did you mention this to your new doctor, those are the kinds of questions you should ask. But do write letters to the state medical board and the office in which he is employed. Relax and listen to that gut!"
Samantha replied: "If your really serious. See a lawyer, they will be able to tell you not the people on yahoo answers. My neighbor sued her pediatrician for a case similar and won. The doc lost his license.
I think that's terrible that your doctor gave such wrong advice & your right he needs a new profession. You could not have known that it was a milk allergy. At least you learned something great, always get a second opinion.
Hope this helps"

Natasha B replied: "Maybe you can file a complaint
I googled american board of pediatrics maybe you can contact them and they can tell you where to go from there...
This doctor screwed up not once but for over four months
That is horrible to live the first five months of your life in constant pain and to have to watch your baby day in and day out in pain....I could not fathom it."
bigwheel2356 replied: "i didnt actually read ur question but u can sue anyone u want even if its stupid
it may not get very far but go for it"
raichasays replied: "Seriously, if you want people to read this, you should use paragraphs and punctuation. Talk about painful.
You can sue the doctor for malpractice on behalf of your child. You will have to prove that he was wrong and that any other doctor in his position would have come to another conclusion. That is not as easy as you might think.
Babies frequently have acid reflux. It is not an unusual diagnosis. She may actually have had acid reflux along with her allergy. You have to prove that he did not meet the standard of care.
As for ear infection, it is quite possible that she did not have an infection one week but had one the next.
It is a very hard case to prove. Even if you prove that he is below the standard of care, you also have to prove damages. With a child that cannot articulate its own pain, that is just a little bit harder,
If this doctor works for company or HMO, complain to the higher authorities. You can also complain to the state medical board. But I don't think a lawsuit will get you anywhere."
Eric H replied: "Doctors make mistakes and milk allergies are not common.
I think that suing the doctor will accomplish nothing.
My nephew went through a similar situation years ago and nobody ever considered suing the doc.
It's just one of those things.
Be glad you found the answer when you did."
? replied: "that is just horrible! I'm so sorry for your baby. I hope she gets better. I would see a lawyer and ask him/her what they think. Or if there is one (and I'm pretty sure there is) Sueing? Sueing for dummies or law for dummies. Hope this helped."
lionheart_209 replied: "As a parent, you always want to get a different opinion from other doctors, because some doctors are quacks/looneys!
I would definately speak to some lawyers, and make that screwy doctor you're baby had pay out his/her azz. It may make them get out of the business or learn what the heck they are doing!"
KerryD replied: "You cannot sue because you didn't like your doctors opinion. You could have seen another doctor. There also have to be damages. Many babies are sick and mis-diagnosed. A doctor isn't a magician or mind reader. To many people, he may be a favorite doctor. You cannot sue just because just because you thought he did a bad job. A malpractice suit has to have 4 elements:
1.) Duty (have)
2.) Breach of Duty (must prove, which in this case is very tough/impossible)
3.) Proximate Cause (" ")
4.) Damages
Basically, just move on and see another doctor. Good luck and hope all is well.
Keep in mind I am an educated paralegal.
To sum it up. You have to prove it was the doctor's fault you baby was in bad shape. In court, they WILL have other doctor's testimonies that are sure to prove you wrong.
For those who don't like my answer, look it up. ITS THE LAW!!!"
arejokerswild replied: "If my baby had that much pair and crying I would have taken her to the ER. You can and should file a complaint with your state's licensing board. It would not hurt to consult an attorney to see if you can sue. You should get copies of her medical records from him in either case.
A doctor almost killed me one time. After that I always remember that half of all doctors graduate in the bottom half of their class. Never wait so long to change doctors again."
gator replied: "Sorry about what happened. You should have gotten a second opinion when you suspected something was more seriously wrong after the second visit. Doctors are registered in the individual state in which they practice. The Board of Medicine or Board of Registration in Medicine governs the conduct of the doctors practicing in a particular state. The actual name of the Board will vary from state to state. If you want to file a complaint against a doctor within a state, you will will have to contact the Board of Medicine to see what their individual procedures are regarding filing a grievance of this type. Usually, the Board will have a website which the general public can access to determine what steps they need to take in order to get the ball rolling."
roter chaot replied: "This is so terrible, I didn't want to believe it. Make sure that you don't give your child any milk products from here on---milk also seems to have something in it that causes babies to get ear infections. My son ended up in the hospital having lost weight, weighing less thanb at birth and at first the docs looked at me like I was the culprit----turned out that he couldn't tolerate the milk formular and after having him on a soy formular he got well(that was over 20 years ago). I've learned to trust my instincts more from that, believe me.
This is what they had on a report, I am not sure if it was the news, or if it was something like dateline: they said that over half of all pediatrician have no extra degree--they have a medical degree just like a primary physician, no specialization---so if you look at a new pediatrician, make sure that this one studied his/her field. Since I am not from America am I not sure where to find the licensing board for America, so you would have to google that---but it is always worth it to go the extra mile....so give that a try.
As far as a lawsuit is concerned: I had gone to a lawyer because my son suffered a breakdown of his nervous system after interference of pre ion medications. The attorney told me that the only way I could be successful with a lawsuit was if my son would have gotten permanent damage from that breakdown and that I had 7 years to file a suit. Thankfully my son did not suffer permanent damage--but I had documented everything---from the pre ions to the hospitals and to the follow up appointments. Had i known then what I know now, I probably would have put my son on an almost exclusive natural approach. The milk allergy was the first one, then came other allergies, and by age 5 my baby had asthma. For each condition there was a medication prescribed---and I will never forget how terrible the result of this med interference was, because my little boy ended up paralyzed for 48 hours---after the stuff wore off his nerves functioned again---and I did not listen to them docs no longer. He is 25 now and has very little problems with allergies and his asthma is gone, thanks to a moderate and natural approach. Good luck"
Can I sue my daughters Pediatrician? am not going to but I am VERY mad with my daughters 1st doctor.
Char K replied: "that was a long read....goodness that situation sucks! yes- get a lawyer! no telling how bad your baby could've gotten and how much longer she could've suffered! that doctor should not be working!"
*VA Mama* replied: "Get an attorney. That's absolutely ridiculous. The moment my daughters bowel movements changed, our doc switched her to soy. She was fine on that for a few weeks then developed colic so he switched her to Nutramigen (hypoallergenic). A pediatrician should know better, not just keep shoving more meds down a poor baby's throat when they obviously weren't helping."
Mommy of 3 replied: "Actually, no. Diagnosing reflux or milk allergies is a very tough thing to do for infants.. it is all trial and error. Blood in the stool os a common side effect from milk allergies in babies, not a sign of malpractice. It sounds like you would be happier if you switched pediatricians.. but to answer your question, no- def NOT malpractice or a lawsuit.
add: Ear infections can accompany teething in many infants... if you know your baby has had an ear infection while teething this time, don't be surprised if it reoccurs as she goes through bouts of teething. My youngest daughter was like that."
rainwriterm replied: "I'm so sorry for all of the problems and heartache that you had to go through and I'm glad to hear that everything is doing better now.
Something that you are learning, though, is that you can't hold your doctor responsible for what happened. As a parent it is your job to research and find the best options for your child. Doctors should be a good source of information, but they aren't the only source. You have to search and gather and then apply what you know to your baby's problems. As sad as it is, we aren't supposed to just blindly do whatever someone tells us. We have to decide for ourselves what we do. But, you're learning that. Next time your daughter has a problem you'll make some decisions about how to fix it and won't have to worry about what the doctor says."
Noah's Mummy replied: "yes get a lawyer. that is not acceptable. the lawyer will be able to give you your options. i agree that man should not be in a job like that. you think you should be able to trust your baby's doctor, but obviously they dont always know best. so glad you trusted your mummy instinct!!! glad your little girl is feeling better"
Hannah's mommy replied: "you can consult an attorney, but I highly doubt you have a case. You will have to prove that he was negligent. Like others said, milk protein allergies can be had to detect.
You *knew* in your heart something was wrong, yet you waited 5 months before seeking out another opinion. If you were not comfortable with his advice, you should of consulted with someone else."
milkmakingmama replied: "You could have avoided ALL of this if you had nursed your baby (She is allergic to COWS milk, not your milk) And unfortunately you cannot sue since no permanent damage was done. You CAN however, report him to the APA (American Pediatric Association) or the AMA (American Medical Association) I would do that if I were you! You are right he should not have his job!"
rxing replied: "you can always sue and even report him to AMA. If he is affiliated with a hospital you can report him there aswell.
remember that you are your childs only advocate, when something doesnt seem right get a second opinion, if you have to go to the ER"
BABA BOOEY!!!! replied: "what would you be suing him for? you can't sue a doctor based on a "what if i kept going to this doctor what would have happened".
and frankly it's rather greedy to think of using your baby's milk allergy to find out how much you can get for suing him.
and if she is still on prilosec then she DOES have acid reflux since prilosec is meant to treat reflux, part of which he told you so he wasn't even totally wrong."
' mmm replied: "Milkmakingmomma should be ashamed of herself!!! Trying to pin this on the mother since she didn't breastfeed? Its people like you that give all of us breastfeeding mothers a bad name for being so rude to formula feeding moms. Anyway, that extremely irritated me!!!
I think you can consult an attorney but I don't think you really have a case."
HELP! Can any one help? My daughter has been sick almost since birth! We were told acid reflex and so we switched her to enfamil ar and zantac and she was still sick all the time throwing up and throwing up and not gaining any weight and was not sleeping much. Her doc kept saying she was fine so we switched to a new doctor. She thinks she has a milk allergy so she switched her to Alimentum similac and prilosec but she couldn't take the prilosec the new formula helped a lot but she still gets a belly ache and the only way to calm her down is to hold her on her belly. but i cant take her crying in pain all the time, and my arms are going to fall off. It breaks my heart to see her in pain. I have been on the phone everyday with the doctors and it just feels like a lot of people don't understand...does ANY one out there understand? been through it? I mean now she almost throws up but it hurts to she holds her breath and turns bright red and will do it a few times in a row and it scares me. Thank you everyone for your time!
Sorry i should have added this, we have added the cereal and we have tried to hold her on our lap and burp her and you can just see in her face how much pain she is in. :( and thanks again for all your help it means a lot. Its a hard thing to deal with and i just want to make sure i get the right help for her. I have tied the er i am hoping to try to find a good specialist in our area
and also there was blood in her poop. the new doc checked that right when we switched so i have no idea what that means but i know its not good
schmushe replied: "Both my children have had reflux and you need to have meds to help rather than continually changing formula.
Domperidone, Ranitatine and infant gaviscon powder are all suitable for reflux (my kids had all 3), also, you need to change to a thick formula - omneo comfort or a hungry baby formula work quite well.
Also, you need to prop the babies head up when they are lay down, so put a pillow under the matress to raise it up as it stops the acid from coming back up!
Reflux is a pain in the **** but its something that you learn to 'manage' and once your babies reflux muscle has strengthened it wont be an issue anymore - usually this is by the time they are 1 yrs old!"
~a~ replied: "I would find a specialist for your Daughter. If you can't find a Pediatrician to help you, this is when you need to find a Specialist. Search the net for Specialists in your area. Your Daughter should not have to go through the first 12 months of her life in suffering pain. She may require surgery in her tummy to fix whats going on. Do whats best for her and get her to someone who is willing to get her all better!
Lots of luck and prayers to you and your baby girl."
pwagner22 replied: "All 3 of my kids had acid reflux when they were babies, lots of baby puke. We switched formulas to find one that limited the number of times they were puking. With my last one, we switched her to Enfamil AR and mixed in rice cereal, which did help a lot. The AR stands for acid reflux and the rice cereal is supposed to help thicken it up in order to keep it in the stomach. With all of my kids, as soon as they turned one and we began switching from formula to milk, the puking stopped. It was just something we learned to deal with, kept burp cloths handy and tried to keep bibs on them as much as possible."
Alexa's Mom replied: "If your baby has colic most likely she will be crying no matter what you do, that doesn't mean you have to listen to it, break out the MP3 player and pop on some headphones while your little one is wailing, you may have to turn up the volume really high tho! If you have to hold her on her belly have you tried putting her over your knees or laying her belly to belly on your stomach while sitting or laying down? It will give your arms a break. Keep on top of your doctor about it, if you think there's still something wrong ask for a referal to a specialist. I know MANY moms who have been told by doctors that their baby is fine and they're just being hyper vigilant only to find out something is seriously wrong. Colic sucks but you just have to get through it without going nuts. Call everyone you know and ask them to come over even if its just to hang out at your house, it's easier if you're not alone and there's another set of hands. Just try lots of different things and find out what will soothe your baby best! Good luck and just keep going!"
flyboywife08 replied: "i will tell you my opinion and then what happen to us if you want to read.
it does sound like a sever case of acid reflux, but you need to be sure. you need to demand you see a pediatric G.I. if you dont feel comfortable with your current ped. find a new one. they obvisoly arent listening to you if they haven't done any tests and are just switching formula. try adding cereal to her bottle. a lot of cereal. one tablespoon per ounce. it will help the formula actually stick to her tummy, but be vigilant of her diapers. this can also stop her up.
here was our situation:
projectile vomit
classified by ped. as "failure to thrive"
didnt gain weight for two months
Here is what we did:
no one listened to me. so we went to 4 different doctors. two said happy spitter and over paranoid mother. 1 agreed something was wrong but military insurance is a crock of crap. last one agreed and pushed for our son to be seen by a pediatric G.I.
so we drove three hours to the children's hospital. where our son had a few xrays, barium test and blood test to rule out food allergies.
our son was switched to alimentum with one tablespoon of cereal added per ounce. double to dosage of zegrid a normal adult gets and weight checks every week.
the blood tests showed he wasn't allergic to milk and soy, but sensitive. he also cant eat anything orange or yellow, makes him throw up more.
now he is doing great."
What A Look is TTC replied: "Sounds like my son!! I tried 3 different peditricans! Every doctor blew me off. Finally he stopped breathing, turned blue, I called 911. They resusited him in the living room. Only after spending 35 days in the pediatric ICU did we get all the answers we needed.
Reflux is the most common diagnoses in infants. Regular peditricans arent QUALIFED to diagnose SEVERE acid reflux(which is called GERD). Drugs like zantac or prilosec aren't going to help eaither. You need to see a Pediactric GI Specialist and try stronger medicine like Reglen.
Also your baby MUST have an extensive allergy test done. Peditricans switch babies formula without actually investigating WHAT the REAL allergy is. My son needed Nutramigen, the same as Alimentum. He had problems with milk proteins because of how painful his GERD was!
My son would scream 16 hrs straight because the pain GERD caused. It took ending up in the ICU to get answers. It was a horrifying experience.
Also, if baby isnt gaining weight here is the best way to avoid failure to thrive (FTT is what a baby is labeled if weight gain is continually a problem) thicken the formula with OATMEAL cereal (just one tablespoon, rice cereal will cause constipation) and add an extra half scoop (or an extra whole scoop if baby is REALLY underweight) to increase the caliores.
Good luck! If no one listens go to the ER. You NEED a diagnoses."
YummyMummy replied: "Have you asked for an ultra sound for the baby? Maybe that would be a good place to start. My girlfriends 2 babies had pyloric stenosis, mind you more common in boys but could be in girls as well.
It could just be acid reflux but I am surprised you haven't had an ultrasound as of yet. Poor thing, I hate hearing of babies in pain."
Help? Does any one understand? My daughter (who is 5months today) has been sick almost since birth! Hannah's mommy replied: "The blood in the stool can indicate a milk protein allergy, that is the reason she switched you to Alimentum.
She is crying in pain from the reflux, all the acid coming back in her throat is burning and hurting her, causing the "almost throwing up"
If the Prilosec didn't work, you need to get another medication that will help with the acid. Her poor tummy and esophagus is probably inflamed from the acid, and you need a medication to help that.
Ask your doctor for another reflux medication, there are many out there. Also, ask for a referral to a pediatric GI doctor, they have much more experience with this problem than a general doctor.
Good luck, I understand how frustrating it can be."
General-Info replied: "Im sorry i have no idea but try other docs take opinions..best wishes"
Tasha replied: "well blood in the poop suggest either constipation or allergy. She may be having some problem with something in the house. Do you have dogs or cats? Is there alot of dust? Try a different soy formula because she may just not be agreeing with that one. also feel her tummy and if its really tight then its just gas which is very common but not usually in 5 months old but it is still possible. Im sorry i cant really tell you whats wrong just make suggestions about what could possibly be wrong. I wish you the best. If you would like to email me at feel free. I have an extremely good doctor who has been doing this for over 40 years. I could call her if you would like or i can give you her number and you can call her for a 3rd opinion in this case lol. I know this is very hard my son was having many problems himself not eating and crying out in pain. Its hard for us as mothers not to know whats wrong and not be able to help them."
girly replied: "Blood in stool can be anything from straining to have a bowel movement, baterica or lactose intolerant. Have you tried soy milk, my son was going through this and we tried every milk possilbe lastly we switched to soy and then everything was much better. You have to be persistent with doctors they are so quick to brush you off, its hard to explain what is happening to your doctor so I video taped my son and showed my doctor and he immediately told me to try soy milk.
Hope it works out for you sorry your little girl is in pain...good luck. Also, I went to a nutritionist who told me doctors are very quick to give baby's alimentum; these milk should only be a last resort because they basically go right through the baby's system will very little digestion from her body, basically her system is not really working hard to digest so basically it a quick fix, but problem is not solved."
aug replied: "better go for a scanning of her intestine . check with ur doctor if it is needed."
